“When Tumi Oguntala was just 14 years old, she lost her 39-year-old mother to cancer. That life-changing experience, she says, “made me scared to start a family because of the fear that I, too, would leave young children behind. Achieving a healthy weight will go a long way towards giving me confidence that I can be here for my loved ones in the future.” Tumi was born in Phoenix, Ariz., and raised in Somerset, N.J., the middle child of three daughters. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University and later received her master’s degree there in business administration. Tumi became overweight after graduating from business school, attributing her weight gain to inconsistent exercise, yo-yo dieting and emotional eating. She says her “aha moment” came this year when she had to return for a second mammogram because the size of her breasts and the weight she had gained since her last mammogram made it difficult for her health care team to interpret her initial results. At age 41, weighing 319 pounds and suffering from high cholesterol, Tumi looks forward to focusing on achieving a healthy weight without the distractions of her day-to-day life at home. Once she loses the weight, she plans to marry her fiancé and start a family”
