Norman and Norma are packing up and moving to a coastal town after the sudden death of Norman’s father. The change is very exiting for the family and they are looking forward to the new start but threats from hostile neighbors in their new town soon causes for a lot of worry and stress. A kid gets up from his bed and goes and checks out a couple of pictures on his wall, he goes into the living room and sees the iron left on and dinner is still cooking. He goes and sees his father dead in another room, he then starts hitting a door looking for his mother. His mother comes out and tells her dad is hurt, his mother walks in very calm and calls him “Norman”.
Norman starts to cry since his father is obviously dead and his mother holds him saying sorry. Norman’s mother is driving the both of them too the new place they’re moving too and they both call each other asses. She tells him to keep his eyes closed as they arrive and helps him out of the car, she sits on the hood of the car and then tells him to open his eyes and we see the Seafall motel, Norman and his mother go to the house and she starts opening all the curtains.
Norman’s mother shows off the living room to him and then leads him up stairs and she shows him his bedroom, then they go down the hall to her room; both being relatively close. His mother starts telling him it’s they’re chance to now start over.
It’s now dark out and Norman goes to collect the luggage from the car and bring it to the house, he sees his mother through the window of her bedroom and continues to go up the stairs. Norman is listening to music at a bench and four girls approach him and start talking to him and he mentions that he has an older brother that doesn’t live with them, the girls invite Norman to join them with a ride as another pulls up in her car.
Norman’s mother at home goes hears her phone ring and takes a long time to answer it, it turns out to be her other son Dylan and it is revealed she never told him they moved. Dylan is freaking out asking for money because his job went bad and she just hangs up on him.
Norman is sitting in class and it just ends, the teacher wants to talked to him about his impressive test scores and that his grades are pretty low though because of their moving. He mentions how his mother is impulsive and likes to move to start over a lot, the teacher than tells him to try and join a sports team or something and he reverts to how his mother doesn’t like sports.
He keeps denying the teacher, because his mother isn’t happy about sports, she grabs his hand and mentions about the loss of his father recently and tells him that he can confide in her when ever he wants to.
He says he has to go and goes back home, his mother is sitting at the table with dinner ready and she was waiting for a while; he tells her that he went to go try out for the track team because his teacher told him to give it a shot. Norman asks his mother to sign a permission slip and she says that she needs help to run the motel but she then says it’s fine and start playing a litte pity act about doing everything herself. She starts getting upset saying she spent all day preparing dinner and everything; she then says she’s not hungry and signs the papers fast and leaves to get groceries.
The next day a man comes up to see Norma and asks him about moving there and how it is, he starts telling Norman about his life and starts insulting him. He reveals he’s Keith Summers and it’s his families property and he’s very upset about them owning the property.
Norman’s mother tells him that she’s very sorry but it’s now their’s and Keith tells her he knows all the secrets about the house and that they don’t understand this town; she threatens him to get off her property or she’ll call the police or shoot him. He tells her to do it because he knows most of them anyways, Norman asks if what she said was right. She just calls him a pathetic loser and a drunk slob.
Keith drives off and Norman and his mother go back inside, it’s now night and Norman’s mother is talking on the phone with someone who she abruptly hangs up on and someone starts ringing the door bell, she goes to check it out and it’s all the girls that Norman met that morning. They ask if Norman can go study with them at the library but she says that he can’t go because they have a lot of packing to do and the girl tells her she loves the house and Norman really wants to go but his mother completely denies it.
Norman is upset at his mother and she says that he can go another time; Norman starts asking why she wouldn’t him go and that she is not letting him live a life. She tells him she’s just looking out for him and he just goes upstairs to his bedroom.
Norman decides to sneak out and tests the height from his window by throwing books outside it and then takes a little leap of faith and lands sloppily. He then runs down the street and the girls tell him he’s so cute because they weren’t even planning to study; Norman goes with the girls to a party.
He’s just walking aimlessly throughout the party looking at what’s going on, they’re lots of girls and people drinking and rolling joints; obviously smoking. Norman starts starring at the girl he’s interested in and she walks up to him and she asks if they’re other friends left him. He says he was just looking at things, she calls him different and he asks what’s so different about him. She says he’s like a beautiful deep still in the concrete world, a random guy comes and screws up the whole moment between the two of them. Norman is introduced to Richard and is offered to go with the girl he’s interested and him to go meet someone else and he declines it.
Back at him his mother is washing the dishes and cleaning up around the kitchen a bit, she then goes over to the window curious as if she heard a sound. She then stops in her tracks walking away and goes back to the window seeing Keith who runs up and smashes the widow; he comes in and starts trying to attack her as she pulls out a knife. He knocks her back against a wall and goes up to her with a knife and he cuts her hand. He pulls out some tape and seals her mouth then cuffs her against the table; he starts telling her the house is his and everything inside is his. He then goes ahead and starts to rape her on the table, but N0rman comes down and hit him across the head with some blunt object. Keith is knocked out and Norman gets the key off of him to unlock the cuffs. His mother then goes and cuffs Keith and she tells Norman to get the emergency kit in the bathroom. Keith is on the floor and is trying to get up, she kicks a knife away from him and hold it towards him. He starts insult her and she goes ahead and stabs him several times in the chest and continuously on the ground.
Norman walks in on the scene of his mother on top of Keith and sees that she killed him, Norman starts telling her that she was attacked and it was self defense; his mother doesn’t want to call the police or anything because it would ruin the chances of their motel hitting it off.
Norman’s mother starts getting angry at him asking him where he was and he said that he went and sneaked out to go to a party and asks what they’re going to do about the body.
She says they’re going to soak up the blood with the sheet and hide the body in a comforter and leave it in one of the rooms bath tubs.
They start wiping the sheets on the floor cleaning up the blood, they then go outside with the body wrapped up and bring it into the fourth room; they struggle dropping the body here and there but finally get it into the bath tub.
Norman asks what they are going to do and she says she’s going to go clean up the mess of blood on the rug; they have to pull up all the carpets from all the rooms with the same carpet so they don’t know it ever happened.
They start pulling up all the carpeting and under it Norman finds a little book, he starts to read it and finds a drawing inside one the pages of woman being tied up and such. But then all of a sudden a vehicle pulls up into the motel and it turns out it’s the police.
Two officers get out of the police car and start looking around the place, seeing the truck full of carpets; Norman’s mother head outside and says good evening gentleman and wonders why they are there. The two officers didn’t know anyone moved in yet and just wanted to see how it was, one officer starts questioning why she has her son up at 2 am when he has school tomorrow and says she didn’t realize the time. They then identify her cut hand and she says it’s just a scratch, they ask to take a look inside and she allows them too. The officer walks into the room Norman is working in, the officer starts walking in and she mentions being a widow.
The officer wonders what’s wrong with the bathroom and she says it’s broken, he offers to go and fix it and he starts going with the corpse in the bath tub with the curtain blocking it off. Norman and his mother are bother worried about it and the officer just comes walking out and the officer says, “You just got to jiggle it.” referring to the chain in the toilet.
The officers then go back to their car and drive off.
Next morning Norman is sitting down at lunch and looks really sick, there’s blood on his shoe that he forgot to clean off and he runs off throwing up into a trash can. A girl asks him if he’s done and then gives him a mint; she has a medical condition that gives her a lot of different side effects and one of them is making her puke. She then asks if he’s okay and he says that he’s fine and she walks off.
Norman’s mother is walking throughout the town and notices a poster talking about missing people and she just walks away; it then goes to night time and Norman and his mother load the body in to the trunk of the car. They drive out to a lake and get into a boat rowing into the middle of it.
Norman’s mother starts saying she’s a horrible mother for letting him go through all this but Norman mentions that she is everything to him and wouldn’t want to live in a world without her since she’s his only family and loves her dearly.
She smiles and says she loves him and he says it right back, they get quiet and she then says they’re deep enough and the two take the body with a chain wrapped around it and throw it into the lake.
Norma changes the sign to Bates Motel and shows Norman that she had changed the sign to blue which was Normans favorite color.
