Canada Sings – Ontario Provincial Police Vs. Westjet Recap 5/15/12

First up was a little blatant WestJet advertising from team Cabin Pressure, who were vying for the win so that they could donate to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. The team was mentored by choreographer Kelly Konno and vocal coach Scott Henderson. Konno and Henderson trained the team for a 50s soul, doo-wop, Grease-style number set in a soda shop. The training session seemed stressful, with Konno helpfully reminding the group, “You gotta remember to walk and sing!” Overweight Jessie had a rather dramatic meltdown as she felt that she could not keep up with her teammates, but she pulled through, reminding herself that she was competing to win money for the hospital that had helped treat her daughter, who was born with a rare illness.

Second to perform was the OPP Project Glee, whose charity was The Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund. Dave Mounsey passed away in 2006 after being involved in a single motor vehicle collision; his charity raises money to purchase life-saving heart defibrillators. A team member said of Mounsey: “He had a passion for living, and that’s what we want to bring to the table… we want to do Dave proud.”  After a discussion amongst themselves, the judges came up with their final verdicts, which I sum up in the following quotations:

Gibson: “It’s not easy to sing, dance, and be transparent, and fight for something bigger than ourselves.”

Ice: “I thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment tonight.”

Jann: “I feel like I have PMS. I am not kidding, I’m so torn, I feel like the crazy lady going through the house with her hair on fire.”

Laurieann Gibson, crying included, clearly stands out as the rational judge beside Vanilla Ice and Jann Arden.

I think that the problem with the concept behind Canada Sings is a lack of continuity. Every week, there are two new teams, and one wins money for their charity, but viewers can’t tune in weekly to root for their favorites like they can on such reality TV singing competitions as The Voice, The X Factor and Idol.
